The European Commission will organise the EU Agri 2040 Conference: “Future-proofing EU Agri-Food through research and innovation” on 24–25 September 2026 in Brussels.

The two-day conference will bring together policymakers, researchers, farmers, foresters, businesses, innovators, start-ups, SMEs, advisers, NGOs and other stakeholders to discuss and co-create priorities for the next generation of European research and innovation supporting agriculture, forestry, rural areas and food systems.

The event will focus on the development of the upcoming “New Strategic Approach to Research and Innovation for competitive, resilient and sustainable agriculture, forestry, rural areas and food systems: Future-proofing EU agri-food through AgRI 2040 and Food 2040”. Discussions will explore how research and innovation can contribute to achieving a more competitive, resilient and sustainable European agri-food sector, while strengthening knowledge exchange, deployment and uptake of research results.

Key themes of the conference will include building a strong European research and innovation ecosystem, enabling the objectives of the EU Vision for Agriculture and Food, and fostering the scaling-up and adoption of innovative solutions across agriculture, forestry and rural areas.

The conference provides an important opportunity for stakeholders from across the agri-food knowledge and innovation community to exchange perspectives and contribute to shaping future research and innovation priorities under the next EU funding frameworks, including Horizon Europe and the future European Competitiveness Fund.
